Yes, there's a terrible homogeneity to the coverage of sports in this country. Just as there is in our coverage of news and of politics and of the arts. Yet there's never been a better time in history for lovers of unloved sports.
If it wasn't the best sports day in history it was certainly one of the busiest. From tennis to soccer to baseball to tracks to hockey to basketball to boxing, June 9 had everything but football.
I'll Have Another's scratch rendered the Belmont Stakes an afterthought. And because the race has so often been about spoilers and disappointments, it seemed almost apt.
We long for a Triple Crown winner. But who in their right mind thought I'll Have Another could possibly be that horse.
