  11. Czech 6-1 Macedonia: Four for Koller

TEPLICE, Czech Republic, June 8 (Reuters) - Striker Jan Koller thumped four goals in an 11-minute spell as the Czech Republic thrashed Macedonia 6-1 on Wednesday to maintain their drive for a place in the World Cup finals. Victory put the Czechs top of Group One on 21 points from eight matches although the Netherlands could regain that place by beating Finland later on Wednesday. Even so, the Czechs could hardly have done better in their last two qualifiers scoring 14 goals and conceding just two in five days. The Czechs pounded Andorra 8-1 on Saturday and after six more goals on Wednesday were the highest scoring team in the European qualifying competition with 28 goals before the completion of all of Wednesday's matches. 'Coming into this set of qualifiers, we wanted all six points. We stayed focused and we got them. We've kept the pressure on our rivals,' said skipper Tomas Galasek. Macedonia shocked the hosts by taking the lead through Goran Pandev who punished a sleepy defence after 14 minutes. But the Czechs kept their poise and continued to push forward until they were rewarded when Koller equalised in the 42nd minute with a deft header from close range off a free kick. Koller netted again just before halftime - a goal originally credited to Milan Baros and then later to Koller, who scored twice soon after the restart to make the game safe. 'Their first goal kind of startled us, but we didn't panic. We're an experienced side and knew it was a matter of just getting going,' said Baros. Jan Polak won a penalty and Tomas Rosicky slotted it home in the 74th minute, and Liverpool striker Baros added a sixth two minutes from time. 'It's my first hat trick for the team so I'm pretty happy about it,' said Koller, who became the Czech's all-time leading scorer on Saturday and stretched his record to 39 goals on Wednesday. 'We're in a good position right now and our attack is strong. I like the direction we are going in.'
