The Mets' Tom Seaver gets his 200th strikeout, setting a record for more than 200 strikeouts in eight consecutive seasons. He becomes a 20-game winner for the fourth time with a 3-0 win over the Pirates at Shea Stadium.
On the day Tom Seaver receives his NL Cy Young Award from 1969, he strikes out 19 Padres, including a record 10 straight at one point, in the Mets' 2-1 win at Shea Stadium.
In a special lottery, the Mets win the rights to sign USC righthander Tom Seaver.
